Date/Time: 12/02, 8:00 PM Sanghun Kim

Location: Zoom Meeting

Topic Discussed: Business Meeting Second Lesson

In this lesson, we continued the topic of American business culture. Sanghun wanted to learn more about this in order to further his speaking and listening with colleagues. We picked up where the last lesson left off, at the cultural differences in relationship and business behavior. To work on his speaking skills, I had him read the question and then answer. These questions were similar to -

1)    Your German supplier has offered you a great deal. It involves a 2-year contract with discounted prices on the products. You have only met this supplier once and are not sure how to convince your Japanese boss that this is the best choice for your company. What do you do?f

This lesson was focused on business behavior and the differences he may face transiting to American culture. We touched base on the previous lesson, to reinforce what he had learned. I had written down his responses to previous questions asked in the last lesson, to see if after this lesson I would get a better response. Some of his answers became broader and came at a faster pace.

Then after the discussion based on business, I asked questions that are short responses. New vocabulary was introduced such as - ‘break the ice’, 'i'll be in touch', 'gossip',

1. If you want to ‘break the ice’ with a new client or customer, what topics are appropriate?

2. If your client sneezes, do you say anything? What is normally said in Western cultures?

3. What does someone really mean when they say, ‘I’ll be in touch’?

4. If a colleague shares some office gossip with you, what should you do? Tell other people? Listen and never repeat it again? Why?
