Topic discussed: Reading Comprehension
For my first tutoring session with Sanghun Kim, I introduced myself and gave him a background on my purpose/motivation behind teaching. I made a lesson plan for reading comprehension. During our introduction, I asked Sanghun what topics he wanted to improve on, and what skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing) he wanted to focus on more. Sanghun Kim is a Ph.D. student, so he is very smart and I needed to get to know him in order to plan an accurate lesson. Luckily, the reading comprehension lesson that I had prepared was exactly what Sanghun wanted to work on. I took one of the passages from the TEFL Exam and listed in the slideshow/PowerPoint. Sanghun is not planning on taking the TEFL Exam, but when I made the lesson plan I did not know this. His purpose for allowing me to practice tutoring with him is so he can better communicate with his colleges. He would like to expand his understanding on business culture, as well as American culture. This is a great topic for our next lesson, and I am glad I took the first half of our lesson to get to know/understand his motivation. This technique will allow me to better teach him and will help in gaining his interest with our sessions. The lesson inculded two reading passages that I had him read aloud to me. I noted some words that he had trouble with, and after completion, we went back and reread the words for his understanding. I then asked him questions on the passage. Some of the words in the passage, - virtually, can be used in differnt contexes. I used the example "Me and you are online right now "virtaully" however, this is not in the same context the passage is refering too. What does this passage mean by virtually?"
